Andy's World Tour of Europe 2000 Diary

Monday May 29, 2000
Today we spent a lot of time at the Deutsches Museum. This place is huge! You could spent a whole day here and not see everything. Met Tony’s friend Martin and his girlfriend Lisa (an American). We had dinner at a Bavarian restaurant.

Seeing as we can’t go into the Czech Republic, we bought train tickets to Berlin. Walked through Olympic Park and went up the Olympic Tower. Walked through English Gardens and later did some internet.

Wednesday May 31, 2000
It’s still raining, but while we had the time we decided to do a sightseeing bus tour to mad King Ludwig II Castles in Bavaria. I was particularly impressed with Neuschwanstein. In the evening we had dinner with Martin, Lisa and a few of their friends.

Our first sunny day in Munich and Tony used the chance to get some decent video of the city centre. Later that morning we meet up with Martin for mountainbike ride in the bavarian countryside. This area is really beautiful country and we had plenty of time to admire the scenery as we peddled along. We stopped at a restaurant for lunch and a beer to go with it! A BBQ back at Martin’s place, about 12 of us there.

Caught a morning train to Berlin on the ICE. It’s one of those high speed things. Arrived in Berlin to find there’s no accommodation of any kind available anywhere. It’s a long weekend when lots for German’s flock to the city, plus President Clinton was in town. Eventually found a B&B (that’s Bed with shared Bath down the hall). You guessed it - this place is a hole. Very stressful day.

Saturday June 3, 2000
Today is not much better. Finding accommodation in Berlin has been a nightmare, and has taken the shine off the place. We rehired our room for two more nights. Walked around the Berlin tourist traps... Tiergarten, Pergamon Museum, Berlinerdome and some other places. Still a bit stressful, which has spoilt our stay here.

Sunday June 4, 2000
We got an early start to do some laundry than get more sleep. Fairly easy day. We visited Charlottenburg Schloss, a restored palace.

Monday June 5, 2000
Up at 530am to be at the Busabout pickup point. The bus would take us to Hamburg. Arrived in Hamburg early afternoon and checked out the city centre. We took a canal ferry ride, visited the red light district and got back to the hostel just after 8pm.
