All About Andy

ANDREW SHEPHERD

MY LIFE THROUGH THE AGES

Age 0
  • Born August 15, 1960 in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.
  • I've always lived in Launceston.
Age 4
Age 9
  • Favourite band Zoot
Age 10
Age 11
Age 13
  • For a reason I won't let on (!) I developed an interest in Western Canada.
Age 14
Age 15
  • Played guitar in a band with my gal-pal Tanya (and a few other bods!) until I was 22.
Age 16
  • January 1987 - Started work at Myer department store. Employed as a goods receiving storeman.
Age 17
  • Picked up an interest in photography (thanks to my Dad).
  • Dropped out of Technical College art school.
  • Learned to drive.
Age 18
  • I wanted to live in Canada but decided it would be too far away from my family and friends.
Age 22
  • Saw the cinema screening of my all time favourite film, Summer Lovers with then girlfriend Leanne, which triggered an interest (the film did - not her) in the Greek Islands.
Age 23
  • October 1983 - Applied unsuccessfully to the Australian Film and Television School in Sydney (now known as AFTRS)
  • December 1983 - Gained part time work with TNT-9, the local commercial TV station as a studio cameraman.
Age 24
  • A week after my birthday, I quit my storeman job and started working full time in the TV industry as a videotape operator. Later on, acquired skills in audio/video production and news editing.
  • Favourite band, Van Halen (the line-up with Sammy Hagar).
  • For about three weeks, secretly dated two girls at the same time.
Age 26
  • August/September 1986 - Travelled solo to Western Canada, visiting Calgary, the Rockies, Vancouver, and an Inside Passage cruise to Ketchikan, Alaska. Met a girl named Debbie, a graphic designer from New Jersey on the bus tour leg of the trip, we stayed in touch for a while.
Age 27
  • Became the senior video editor in the News Department and shortly after, the station was sold and became known as Southern Cross Television.
  • Moved out of home for a while and lived with some work mates to sample my independence.
  • I came to the conclusion that relationships with women are just too demanding and break-up with my last ever girlfriend, Tanya (not to be confused with the "gal-pal" mentioned earlier).
  • May 1988 - Moved back home with Mum and Dad.
  • June/July 1988 - Again travelled solo across Canada, from Vancouver to Toronto. Met up again with Debbie and in her busy schedule, generously found time to show me around NYC.
Age 28
  • December 1988 - Met Michael, who became one of my best friends.
Age 29
  • April 1990 - Bought my first home (a home unit/apartment) and rented it out for four months.
Age 30
  • August 1990 - Moved out of my parents house for the last time and into my unit... I'm totally independent this time.
Age 32
  • Met my best mate Tony, who introduced me to Macintosh computers, techie gadgets, sarcasm and wit, road trips up the east coast of Australia (visiting our friend Michael who'd moved to Sydney), mountain bike rides, hiking, and basically living life.
Age 36
Age 39
  • May/June/August 2000 - Tony and I took some well deserved long service leave and backpacked through western Europe, including the Greek Islands, and UK (see my trip diary and photos)

Age 48
  • December 2008 - Celebrated 25 years of employment with Southern Cross TV.
  • May 2009 - Tony and I visited our friend Michael, who now resides in Macau, and did some site-seeing in Hong Kong.
  • June 2009 - The corporate owners of Southern Cross TV, Macquarie Bank, decided to make my position of Video Editor redundant and I receive a some-what disappointing payout.
  • July 2009 - I pick up some casual work with SCTV's Production Department.
Age 49
  • June 2010 - Did a three week tour of England, Wales and Scotland with Tony.
